um so excited that folks are joining us uh this evening my name is Ariel Velasquez I work at photo College in our Outreach and financial aid departments um I'll be sharing some general information about financial aid and kind of things that folks can expect um some of the amounts that students can expect as well um throughout the presentation if folks have questions uh and you are able to please uh don't hesitate to add your name uh or add your question to the chat uh and we'll try to get to it uh at the end and again we shouldn't have too long of a presentation um but if folks have questions we are totally on board to stick around at least here are the hours that um photo colleges financial aid office is open and again a lot of this information will be similar across uh community colleges so I'll I'll let you folks know if something is Foothill specific or maybe it's a general thing that that happens throughout California um but if folks want to take a screenshot uh here it is so let's talk about financial aid money for college uh actually that's 1 of the ways that I first uh came to college I heard uh from my mom that textbooks were free uh now when she told me this um we didn't have what we would call now the foothill promise program we had uh kind of different programs and actually my mom was at Foothill English classes and she ended up uh going to the bookstore and finding out that oh actually textbooks cost something when you get to College um and lucky for her she actually found the president of the college who was actually in line it was her first year as president and she was offering to buy uh some students their textbooks my mom happened to be 1 of the lucky recipients and she didn't know that she was 1 of the only people who got free textbooks so she came home uh you know years later when I was deciding to go to Foothill she said oh there's free textbooks there just go ahead and go um the difference says I didn't know that you had to do a financial aid application I didn't know how you can access money uh and so it was a little bit of a a struggle for me I didn't do my FAFSA application when I was in high school um so I'm I'm I'm happy that folks are here uh asking questions learning about the process and uh by the time the folks are in college and university uh you'll hopefully have your financial particulars uh set up for me I had to go part of my first year uh without applying for financial aid and it wasn't until I actually um was forced to go and ask a question by my mom and so um she's like I'm not going to pay for you if you're going to be getting these CDs um and F grades that's just once um but I ended up going and trying to ask a question now the issue with me is I was very shy and I was very quiet and introverted when I was younger uh so I stayed in the car and I sent my mom to go and ask a question I was like well you're paying for it so just go yourself the issue though is once you get to College um uh staff members faculty members are actually not allowed to talk to your parents uh we consider you an adult whether you're 18 or not if you're a Foothill College student or if you're a community college or university student uh there's laws that prevent us from actually sharing information with your parents unless you give the approval that means a couple things for 1 that meant that I didn't have to hide my report cards anymore I didn't have to intercept them in the mail adjustment that I had to take the initiative and ask questions myself uh my mom went by herself and I got a call about 5 minutes later from the counselor saying hey your mom is here asking questions like what's up with that I was like um okay I thought we could do it that way so I went I didn't really guys I could get on my classes paid for I could get my textbooks paid for uh and I could even get some money on the side on top of that and I even actually got a job on campus from that meeting but I had to take that first step and whether I was forced to or whether it was by my own ition I was able to get hooked up with financial aid uh now most folks on the call um whether no matter your background where your situation is there's uh different pools of money that folks can take advantage of so we'll go through some of those today um but don't hesitate to ask questions um and again I was pretty introverted and and now that I'm in college and I actually graduated from college I was able to kind of develop a little bit more and so now I'm not hesitant to ask questions but it did take some time so if you're perhaps in the same boat um I was right there with you and I was able to afford my college education in large part because of financial aid that I was able to get so let's talk about some of those uh particulars that folks have um so financial aid provides financial support through Federal and in-state programs to help you while you attend college we hear financial aid um they know that it's perhaps money that you use to pay for college um any college can get pretty expensive unfortunately it is not like some uh high schools where if you're a public school typically you don't pay anything or your textbooks might be free in college a large amount of uh the textbooks uh have a cost and the classes have a cost um but there's actually opportunities for students to potentially study for free uh to get money on top of getting everything covered already so uh we will totally share those with you uh we'll go over types of Grants loans and scholarships um what you are able to use that money for and then we'll also show how to apply for financial aid um if folks uh maybe have older siblings or perhaps have applied to financial aid before uh there have been kind of some hiccups and some issues with the FAFSA in this past year really every year there's issues but uh there have been some difficulties and uh we are trying to handle things as much as possible but it is open as of um very very recently so folks are interested in going and doing the FAFSA after this perhaps you've already started it um I'll share my our contact information afterwards if if you do want to interact with us or maybe we uh I think we do have some workshops coming up too so we will uh be on your campus and help out as well um why choose Foothill as well so again uh I will try to be as general as I can if I know some folks might not be interested in Foothill particularly you might be interested in other colleges like deanza perhaps closer to the San Jose area but um a lot of this information can be General so I'll try to be as broad as I can all right so there are 2 types of financial aid and usually I will give a prize uh for students who are able to answer what is the difference between Grant scholarships uh and federal work study um here you can see that it is money that you do not pay back so grants um you might might hear that that typically comes from the government it might come from the state of California and that'll be money that helps you pay for your classes um at Foothill or at um in University and college we do call uh uh the cost of your classes tuition so that is called a tuition um but Grant scholarships and federal work study is money that you do not have to pay back uh scholarships are free money that you get and I know a lot of folks here about uh scholarships for sports for example but there's a lot of scholarships that students can get uh for academics for perhaps coming from different backgrounds uh so there's a lot of different opportunities I believe I see a question in the chat how should a student with unique circumstances that qualifies them as an independent student fill out or go about the FAFSA um uh that's a great question question so we do have uh 2 different kind of uh uh financial aid applications depending on um your status uh via your immigration status perhaps and again you do not have to be a US citizen to apply for financial aid um if you are an independent uh there are some uh rules that dictate whether you're able to actually fill out independent um so yeah we will totally um go through that during the presentation and if you have questions we can help you out after so yeah we will totally get back to you um federal work study is also another opportunity that students don't realize part of financial aid so if you want to get a job on campus oftentimes you have to do a FAFSA application or a dream application depending on your status uh and that is because we have to kind of make sure that you have uh 1 work authorization uh but also uh there's money that the government gives out every year uh for student employees at Foothill we have about 100 maybe 150 students who work on campus and that's different events like giving presentations such as this that could be giving campus tours that could be working in the financial aid department uh that could be working governments uh passing out food during different events there's a lot of things that you can do um at a 1 time at the same time it helps on your resume a lot of students think that you have to attend college and then get a career in a job afterwards while you're in college you should consider getting a job potentially if you can um so don't wait until you finish up because a lot of my classmates who didn't have jobs on campus maybe they didn't participate uh they were saying okay I'll just work when I get out of college Unfortunately they will realize that they had no job experience and the students like myself who were uh perhaps by necessity in jobs on campus were more well-rounded applicants into the job pool and to universities and so I would always encourage students to look at federal work study um and there's also funding so you can apply even if you don't get financial aid students Council work on campus particularly if you're like an international student uh chances are you might not get grants or scholarships but for example you would be able to work on campus and get some money that way and there might be some scholarships available depending on your situation and uh when I say International it's specific claiming students here on a F1 Visa uh or a specific Visa type if you're undocumented or have a different status we can totally talk to uh talk to you about kind of your options but there's many available so do not think that because of your status you don't get uh financial aid money that you pay back so that is uh loans and we have 2 main types of loans uh at the college uh that is subsidized and unsubsidized loans and so loans are money that you pay back and so that would be money that let's say they give you 5,000 you can use that to pay for your classes to pay for for your books uh but you would have to pay that back unfortunately all right let's so uh grants that we offer and I think I do have a slide where I will chat um about the types of loans so don't worry if I went on too fast um we will talk about loans in a second um but uh grants that we offer so the main 1 and this is 1 that I got when I was a student was the federal pel grants that is for undocu undergraduate students who demonstrate Financial need um the pel grant is very useful because it is uh 6 or 7 thousand dollars that you can get in your pocket um for your uh educational career and so it's about 6 to 7 thousand dollars per year um and so that's probably the most common 1 that students will get uh and typically that does uh factor in your family income so if you do your FAFSA uh perhaps you have like a lot of members in your family maybe you have only 1 parent who works um if you do demonstrate Financial need uh you can get the pel grant that's 1 of the more popular options on campus there are different types of Cal grants as well uh the California grants and we're fortunate to live in California state that does uh support a lot of folks uh in their careers so that is available for students pursuing an undergraduate degree vocational or Career Training uh that might have a GPA requirement depending on which Grant it is um a lot of students uh and you will hear and again and if this is a lot of information totally uh okay to ask questions or uh you know make sure to come by to the next sessions that we have and we'll we'll make sure to get your questions answered but there's different types of Cal grant B some of them might be for folks who are single parents uh and um we always recommend that students look at other options because some of these uh for example for the Cal grant some students like to wait and not get that money right away and you because there is a 4 year uh limit so believe for the pel grant students are able to uh do 6 years so let's say for whatever reason you can't graduate from college in 4 years uh and it does seem like more and more often the the average is 5 years even 6 years uh so there is financial aid so example you could potentially get the pel grant for 6 years uh you could potentially get the Cal grant for every for 4 years um so if you are uh looking at getting financial aid maybe try to look at uh scholarships working on campus uh so do everything possible before you look into getting loan it's it's it would be my recommendation there's a California promise Grant uh that is a waiver that covers enrollment fees I not talk a little bit more about the different promise grants so um you might have heard the foothill promise or the deanza college promise uh it is legislation that passed in the state of California where um we do uh offer free tuition for students and tuition is a cost of classes um so at foot at the community colleges in your area you are able to get uh the the full cost of classes uh removed for you depending on the college there are different stipulations so for example at Foothill uh there is uh the promise program and you are able to get um free tuition so free classes no matter your family income there are some schools like dianza uh who will limit it a few family makes 250,000 or less than you get free tuition if your family makes more than that you would be uh required to pay um for your classes and different schools do it that way um some other schools might say uh maybe the first you know 500 students the first thousand students can get their classes paid for some colleges might say we'll cover your classes and cover your books so different community colleges have different promise programs so I would encourage you to look at different colleges um especially if you're not sure what you want to attend the financial aid package might be an impact uh in your decision specifically the photo promise program covers the first 2 years of student tuition and again tuition is just the cost of classes and the cost of attending uh and paying for those classes uh the qualifications for the photo promise program or that you have not attended College before uh so this is your first time in college if you took classes while you're in high school through dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment that is totally fine you are still eligible to get 2 years of free tuition uh um so you you are totally eligible so even if you took a few classes even if you took a lot of classes while you're in high school um you are not uh you you are still able to to attend um this is mainly for students perhaps who will go off to a university uh or go off to another College um maybe uh for a semester for a quarter for a year and then decide maybe this isn't the right fit for me so they'll come back to Community College um and that case uh you may not automatically qualify for the promise program and again the benefits of the promise program is that that is regardless of your family in so when you report your tax information from your parents um no matter if that's a million dollars no matter if that's a billion dollars that they make if it's a Foothill College you are able to get the full cost of your attend of attendance uh covered is anyone here uh the family makes a billion dollars a year let me know I will share my venmo information it's for a very important scholarship by promise it will say my name on it but don't but don't worry about that but again so regardless of your family income some callers will be based on the family income uh some of them might limit it so make sure to look at different colleges and what they offer uh the other requirement is it is that you are enrolled in at least 12 units uh or at least 3 classes you have to be a full-time student uh Foothill and deanza college are schools on the on the quarter system uh which means we're basically trimester so the semester system where it's typically about 16 weeks uh Foothills classes are 12 weeks long so 3 months long uh the cool thing about that is that you don't have to take too many classes at a time the most that students take will be 3 to 4 classes and that is actually the minimum so taking at least 12 units or 3 academic classes uh means that you were again eligible then for the Foothill College promise which covers the cost of your classes so free classes you just have to take 3 classes I also have to qualify for in-state tuition again uh we'll share a little bit about um the requirements to qualify for in-state tuition but um if you're doing a um uh some students who do the cadaa application uh may also be uh able to qualify and but some folks might have to qualify through other means and again this promise uh This Promise program is again and just to make it clear this is not the only type of financial aid that you can get if students have Financial need um you would likely then get financial aid based on your financial need um but this program is great for students who perhaps uh maybe middle income perhaps even higher income uh but maybe you don't get full support from your family I think that's 1 the questions earlier um so there are opportunities for folks to get the cost of their classes even if they're not under their parents and then going back to the loans like I mentioned so if all else fails and you can get financial aid um uh from other reasons uh there are loans available to students and those usually are broken up into 2 categories subsidized and unsubsidized loans uh subsidized loans are available to undergraduate students uh who demonstrate Financial need and interest accumulate 6 months after you leave school so uh subsidies you know subsidies that's kind of like the government supporting a little bit um and giving you a hand a bit um so the key part of this is that interest begins to accumulate 6 months after you leave school so um that is not leading Foothill that's not leading dianza that's when you're done with your uh with your schoolwork so let's say that it takes you you know 6 years to graduate from Foothill then maybe like if you're like me then you go to Foothill and you go to UCLA uh maybe you don't know your major like me I changed my major 3 times and that's not counting the other 3 times where I also changed my major so you're not sure perhaps what you want to study um and you take a little bit longer there is the ability to then kind of defer those loans or how you would say you don't get interest the crude so um for example you borrow 1,000 um if you pay that back um immediately basically you would then pay back 000 um there's interest though that builds up after 6 months so let's say you wait 10 years that thousand that you owe might turn into dollars that you owe just because it occurs interest every month so this is 1 of the benefits of the subsidized loans is it gives you some time so let's say it takes you again 6 years it will not begin to accrue interest until you graduate and you from school the unsubsidized loans is available to graduate and undergraduate students um this 1 perhaps financially may not be required uh but this 1 interest accumulates after you are paid so for unsubsidized loans typically you will start seeing interest buildup from the moment you take out those loans so if you are absolutely uh in in in financial need and you need to take out a loan I would probably recommend going with the subsidized uh but check out your financial situation um because again those uh the interest is typically what really handicaps a lot of people um if you borrow a thousand dollars you have to pay a thousand back maybe that a little easier but if you pay a thousand if you get a thousand dollars and you have to pay 3 times the amount um it does it does get a little more difficult so please make sure to look at all the other options available first before you look out loud so what is the money for so do I have to use this money only for academic things can I only use pencil a buy pencils um no so there's actually a lot of opportunities for folks to uh use this money um for a wide range of things so here is the breakdown and I know this could be a little bit scary but here's a breakdown of the cost of attendance um and this is assuming you students are uh Ting class for 9 months uh and this factors in everything that it takes to live and again these are projections um from are at the um from the state of California I believe maybe the federal government um so the this is kind of how much money it takes so tuition and fees let's say you don't get the promise program um for whatever reason uh tuition so basically the cost of classes about 15 $100 uh for students each class at Foothill um is about $150 so the cost of the way they Factor the cost is uh it's $31 per academic units at Foothill and Danza uh it's about $6 per academic unit um at the semester schools that would be like San Jose State um you know or sorry not how you say that would be like Community College City College of San Francisco City College of San Jose uh West Valley Mission uh schools like that um books and supplies that can get pretty pricey uh particular students who are perhaps uh in biology and the Sciences sometimes you need a textbook and you need an access code from the Pearson uh and those can get pretty expensive so um there's a program uh and we'll talk about a little bit but there's a financial program programs that can help you cover the cost of your textbooks as well um especially if students who have Financial need there's a chance that you'll get support now the the scary line item here is the housing uh rent and food so uh this is not money that you'll be required to pay because you came to Foothill because you came to community college or university I just kind of what they factor is just going to cost for you to live uh for you to eat uh assuming that you were perhaps living at home or you perhaps live with with parents uh and in actuality it might be a lot less or this might be covered by family members by parents uh so this is different for everybody other miscellaneous costs uh so Transportation they're they're factoring in how much it costs perhaps for gas uh other expenses perhaps so the totals you can see down below um if students are non-residents so uh 1 thing to point out is students um can pay instate tuition which is typically uh subsidized so it is a little bit cheaper uh students are able to do uh that if they've lived in California for at least a year so another thing to factor in is students who qualify automatically for um perhaps you were undocumented you live in a in a different country and you moved here uh if you've been studying for 3 years um or more at a California High School uh you would then automatically be considered a um as a resident um but if you just came to this country perhaps uh or you just moved here perhaps in a different Visa status um if you just move here there's a chance that you might pay non-resident tuition um but students typically maybe they'll be here for at least 1 year uh they're able to then also so qualify for non-resident tuition even if they didn't attend high school in California so they make me put this up there but again don't get scared and I think I remember seeing this when I was a student and being like okay I'm not going to go to college um but no we totally help out students um so the price tag goes significantly less than this and again this factors in kind of what what you would be spending on food anyways so how to apply for financial aid so um you can fill out the free application for federal student aid is the FAFSA a lot of students a lot of people pronounce it FASA uh but it is the free application for federal student aid so it should not cost you any money to do this application um it is uh an application for them to give you money so uh you should not be paying anything uh students who can't do the FAFSA are typically US citizens or eligible non-citizens uh if you have a valid social security number um not taxpayer ID number if you do have a valid social security number you can do the FAFSA application uh the other popular application is to do the California Dream Act application that's the cauda cada uh and that's for undocumented students eligible for ab540 uh and again if folks are not aware and and feel free to take a screenshot of this but we will uh share this afterwards with folks um but ab540 is legislation uh in California that allows for folks who've been here for 3 years or more to automatically uh qualify for uh California uh financial aid um the way that this uh helps a lot of students is perhaps people who came to this country when they were very young um and sometimes people don't even know that they're undocumented perhaps because it's not something that they discuss with their family uh and sometimes they'll find out when they're doing the financial application so um no matter what your background is or your status is there are uh opportunities for you to uh take classes at Foothill deanza College um so it is not a requirement to be a US citizen or to have a Social Security number uh but there's uh depending on your status and we might have to get a little creative some students have work authorization some students do not um so there are options for students um that are available uh and we at Foothill we've also been exploring uh with doing fellowships so there are uh maybe students who are in different um Avenues of undocumented status or perhaps uh uh International status uh perhaps they can't work on campus legally uh depending on their situation uh but perhaps they could qualify for a fellowship and so perhaps they help it's kind of like a scholarship if you work on campus um we want to support all the students who do that so we don't want you to volunteer whenever possible now even though it looks great on your applications but if you can get paid uh we try to get the students if possible and so both the applications will use your family income information to determine what kind of financial aid you may be eligible for so again even if you feel like your family makes a lot of money um everyone should do the FAFSA or the cadaa application everyone should try to do do that um because sometimes there's jobs on campus uh that might require you to have your information on file if you absolutely I have had students who say you know I I just my family doesn't want to be in the system um for whatever reason uh and so they don't want to do the financial aid application uh and and we can we can talk afterwards perhaps on on maybe what options you might have uh or again I think it was a question as well a lot of folks maybe have a difficult situation with their parents maybe your parents uh provided support for you but maybe they don't support anymore um so that's another common uh situation so things changed uh we can always kind of work with you but typically when we're doing these applications we try to go based on uh the information that your family submitted to the IRS so whatever taxes you filled out uh you know if you had 1 parent who was uh you know the the main um person who claimed you on their um on their taxes that's the person who you would put um put the information for all right so what is doesn't mean to be ab540 um so you can take a look at this and hopefully I'm not blocking any of the texts there but uh if you attended a high school for 3 uh full years uh they do not have to be consecutive uh and so proof of a high school uh completion or the equivalent uh some folks will uh for example maybe they came um to this country and they only had maybe 2 years or maybe 1 year that they lived in California um and there are different avenues that we work with students so sometimes they uh might work on their English deals and so they can't take our classes that are non-credit so you can't take free Foothill classes um to build up your English let's say you you need maybe another year of Eligibility um you can't take classes for free uh that are to learn English to maybe learn some computer skills uh to learn some basic writing uh and then you can uh you know maybe after your first year you can take the the classes that are you know the psychology the anthropology history any of the general classes um and then you wouldn't have to pay uh the non-resident fee um so be enrolled or accepted into an eligible program as a regular student seeking a degree or certificate uh if you are without lawful immigration status you will have to file an affidavit with the college or university you are attending state of the you have filed an application to legalize your immigration status status or that you will file an application as soon as you're eligible to uh and this seems kind of scary at at least at Foothill it's just a small form that you sign uh that indicates that um you are attending the college uh and that you are hoping to mature uh to um you know figure out your immigration status um and so if that takes some a long time if that takes a short amount of time uh we just want you to fill out that form uh and let us know that you are kind of hoping to um gain legal status um and it's it's a super easy form so I know it an affidavit what is that um it is just a small form and chances are you can do that via email and you don't even have to leave your your house um so there's more information on the right hand side uh for some of the legislation if folks do want to take a look later on uh ab1 130 allows students who meet ab540 criteria to apply for and receive non-state funded scholarships for public colleges and universities so again fortunately we do live in California and they are generally pretty um pretty helpful with folks especially who are not documented so um there are some opportunities so don't think because maybe your immigration status that you don't belong in college you all belong in college I belong in college maybe not because of my grades um but everyone deserves a chance to to improve their their uh education and and their life and so whenever possible we try to make that um priority to help students out uh and importantly to uh the eligible for the Cal grant please try to do the uh FAFSA or the dream application as soon as possible uh by the California Dream uh by the March 2nd deadline okay all right so other programs that can minimize costs so um at Foothill and iadanza we have a program called eops um at all the other colleges they will have a similar program they might call it the EOP program the extended opportunity program at universities also have a version of this program as well uh extended opportunity program and services at Foothill uh help students who have uh Financial need perhaps um and they will help you cover the cost of your textbooks so we talked about the promise program which the foothill promise or the Community College promise program in California will cover uh the cost of your classes uh depending on the school it might help you with your books um at Foothill it just covers the cost of your classes um if you have Financial need you can uh look into the eops program and I strongly encourage you uh to take a look at this after and and if you can uh go through our website and find some of these resources uh students who are in eops or are learning communities and that would be a community like umoja uh which works with our black and African-American diaspora uh you do not have to be black or African-American to join that program uh I'm just interested in the topic and learning with uh with the diverse group of folks uh and those students actually do field trips and you'll get to visit historically black colleges and universities the Emoji program went to UCLA um in Berkeley last year and so you can do college strips similar to a programs like Avid um or or buente at your high school except you don't have to take as much as many notes you don't have as much homework um uh the point that program likewise is for uh students interested in latinx culture and again you do not have to be lat or Latina to join uh this program just interested in getting the topic you do learn from um Chicano um writers and so um you will learn kind of in a smaller Community you get to be in classes with the same amount of same students um so especially if you're worried about perhaps making in college um perhaps looking into umoja or Puente uh could be a good idea and again you do not have to be from a specific cultural background to join these programs under program that is a brand new is Mesa uh the Mesa program uh works with students perhaps from uh disadvantaged background we're interested in the stem field those are are are careers in science technology engineering or mathematics um if folks are interested in those programs we do have a lot of support available uh and just anecdotally I can tell you that a lot of students uh and people of color who are interested in pursuing careers in the stem field um have a lot of great support programs and then they oftentimes are able to transfer to Great universities um and and work together with that support so don't feel like uh you know you are alone in this in this path uh for eops for our learning communities um students actually 1 of the other benefits is you able to sign up for classes earlier than other students uh so let's say that students get to register 2 months before classes begin uh students get to do a week ahead of time um so typically like for example for fall quarter you might sign up for your classes uh you know in mid July early July because again Foothill College and Deanna College we start in late September we are on the quarter system so if you do come to Foothill College or deanza college you will get an extra month-long break uh because we late September a lot of other community colleges um who are on the semester system will start in in late August maybe early September so an extra month for you to forget everything you learn in high school and start off with a 4.0 what could be better uh but again you can apply for these uh program and then even get classes even earlier than that and I think I also mentioned in the past that um at semester schools the cost per unit is $6 at Foothill Indiana the cost is $11 it doesn't mean that a Foothill or the ends you pay less you actually pay about the same we just count the units differently um so at semester schools you would be completing 60 semester units to get your degree at 40 you complete 90 units but it's the same amount of classes are 1 of our classes will just be counted as 4 or 5 units at the semester school they would it's a 3-unit class but it's roughly about the same and the amount of units that a classes is typically how many hours you will be spending per week in that class if you're in a semester School of course um it's 16 weeks so you're only spending about 3 hours per week in class uh maybe 4 if you are on the quarter system you may be spending 4 or 5 hours a week in class uh but it's quicker and you're done in 3 months so to each their own and I would definitely encourage you to take a campus tour of the colleges that you're looking to attend and and ask the students what they think um so why consider Foothill College so um for your colleges and universities are expensive um here you can see an example of the tuition only so again not to scare you uh but these are typically the the um tuition again that's the cost of attendance uh for example at San Jose State is about 8,000 per year at the UC system so like a UC Riverside it is 13,700 per year and if you attend a private university locally like Santa Clara University or Stanford that you're looking at perhaps a thousand dollars for those schools um and again this is just for the cost of attendance so if you're looking at the cost of attendance this does not factor in your housing or some of the other miscellaneous items that you might have seen on that 1 of those first slides so 1 of the good things though is you can get financial aid um from the government if you go to uh a public university system like the CSU or the UC system um there's a lot of uh Financial that you can get at private universities as well um but you it is a more expensive Bill and so um it's a it's a scarier number to look at but all of these you can get financial aid so I'm not trying to say that you can only come to Foothill College in fact when I went to use UCLA um there was the blue and gold program where I believe it's if you made $1,000 or less um they would cover the cost of tuition I believe that's at a lot of the universities as well um Stanford has that so if you are interested in going to University a lot of these schools have a version of The Promise program at community colleges they might just call it something different uh the cost of attendance at Community College so Foothill for example is about again 1,500 um and again that's whether it's a semester or um order school it is uh typically about the same cost of attendance um you do have scholarship opportunities and 1 of the cool programs on campus is the UC tag program tag your it uh the University of California transfer admission guarantee program and so that's the UC tag right here uh very important because students are always looking for what university they might attend um after they go to Community College so again Foothill uh and Community College in general is typically a 2-year pathway so students go for 2 maybe 3 years to Community College and they can transfer and do 2 maybe 3 years at the University level that's what I did so the tag program is a program that you can actually get a guaranteed admission to uh 1 of 6 UC campuses so that would be like UC Davis UC Irvine Merced Riverside Santa Cruz there's always 1 that I'm missing um but 6 UC campuses and not included are UCLA Berkeley and San Diego um those schools are most transferred to schools though um you just can't get a guarantee program you would apply as a traditional student but that tag program allows you to uh kind of sign a contract with 1 University uh that you choose and they have to they have to legally save a spot for you on their campus if you do the terms of the affect you do not have to attend that school if you decide not to so I did for example a tag agreement with UC Davis when I was transferring uh and last minute I got my acceptance letter from UCLA and they um they offered me admission to UCLA so I chose UCLA uh and then my spot that I had reserved at UC Davis then went to somebody from the waiting list um so I would definitely look into the tag program looking to transfer options as well um you can explore educational goals and transition so um a lot of students like uh maybe they're nervous about uh going off to University maybe do a a couple years um kind of maybe save some money make some friends uh grow more mature and then when you're off at a university uh you know you'll be uh a better applicant a better candidates and do show that a lot of transfer students end up doing better um than folks who uh maybe go straight into a 4 year and somebody asked that as Foothill has a construction management program unfortunately we do not um uh I I can check after afterwards which schools might have that I do have a a little a chart that shows which community colleges in the area um do offer that I wish I knew off the top of my head unfortunately so I'm sorry about that all right so uh ways to contact us so if you do want to take a screenshot of this um these are the financial aid Specialists um and at Foothill specifically they group folks based on your last name um so if you see your last name uh it's a b c d e or f um your point your specialist would be Julia Aguilera and so on and so forth and all these folks are awesome and you are able to message any 1 of them um they do handle kind of a general load as well um but there's Specialists based on your last name and who can hopefully guide you through the process um we also have on the right side the financial aid website so uh so sorry the email and so if you do want to have any questions or want to give us a call or want to come up in person uh we are in building 8100 uh room 810 1 and that's close to parking lot 8 so if you want to come by uh maybe get a campus tour and also come and check out the financial aid department now there is some time still for folks um to ask some questions I believe I think there might be my last line so I'll leave this up um for a bit it is 641 so yeah folks do have questions I think I'm seeing some of those coming in uh but you have questions about what we discussed um please uh let me know and again those can be about financial aid specifically uh about Campus Life at Foothill or deanza transfer ing um go ahead and and let me know but um I'm going through the questions though uh whoa well I'll leave this slide here and again I will have a I do have another I can show folks the uh photo collage website so you can access more resources um as well so but uh feel free to drop your questions in the chat uh there is a question uh from sesh uh tag versus I get see what is the difference um and so that's a great question uh the I get see that you you uh list there is um the uh that's like the general transfer curriculum um so if you do a tag agreement or if you do for example like our honors program and do like Advanced study uh you are um typically following the I getsy which is uh the way that um maybe not a great but a lot of high schools you have like the 8 through G requirements that you have to do I get to see it's kind of like the a through G requirements at the college level um so I get see generally students want to follow the I get see um and if you do the tag program for example you might have to take a couple extra extra classes for example uh but generally you follow at getsy um you're usually pretty okay you might have to do a few extra classes uh to keep your options open let's for me for example I wanted to go to perhaps Berkeley UCLA UC Davis um 1 of these colleges 1 of the um School's required me to do 1 extra uh English class I believe 1 of them wanted me to do uh Communications and public speaking so I just took both of those just to keep all my options open and someone asked can we contact them even as high school students or go in person folks who are welcome to come by um if you've already um listen if you're a student for example you did an application for admission to Foothill College you will have a student ID number and that um makes it super easy to help you out because then we can kind of check uh on your status and and any of your paperwork um but you were able to ask general questions if you want to so I would say if you do want to reach out to FH financial aid office at fhda.edu we made it a nice easy email for you so you could write that down but feel free to give us a call um and yeah if you do want to get more support or make an appointment with a council for example you do have to have a student ID number uh and the way you get that is just applied to the college um and it takes takes about an hour uh and you'll have a student ID number within the next day um you do not have to enrolling classes right away so if you do want to just have that so you're a photo collage student um then you can come and get all the free burritos on Wednesdays and use all of our services and talk to a counselor that's a good question all right any other questions um if not um and yeah so we are doing a cash for college Workshop so we do have a series of folks want to take a look at the um cash for college workshops we will be out uh in person uh helping you and then and these are Representatives typically from um any of the community colleges so it's not perhaps someone specifically from Foothill maybe somebody from uh from the area uh who works in in your area so um another question I see is what about students facing homelessness uh filling out the FAFSA uh that is a great question um yes uh so yeah if we do have actually a lot of students who are homeless uh who attend our College um we do have support programs to actually Let Me Maybe um segue perhaps into showing you our website so you can see some of the resources that we offer all right so let's take a look really fast uh but that is a great question yeah we do work uh with our community to help folks uh we also try to find housing for people as as well um and we are fortunate that we live in uh uh uh affluent areas and Foothill College specifically where um some of the folks who live in the Los Altos Hills area also uh tend to rent out rooms for students they're trying to get back perhaps they're already retired and they have mansions and so there are opportunities for students to live uh perhaps we don't have dorms on campus but you can kind of live in the community as well or we can put folks in contact with uh different different resources all right um but here is uh our foot website hopefully you're able to see that on the screen um and um you can see uh on the very top if you do want to apply for admission you just click on here apply and register and it takes you to um the open CCC application which is the pro the system that all the Community College ledgers in California use um if you want to go to cost and financially and again I encourage you to look at this for any of the colleges that you're interested in attending because the financial aid might be different at different schools now of course you have to do your FAFSA and actually I would say um 1 last piece of advice too is if you are doing your FAFSA or your dream application your cada um you are going to have an option to enter multiple schools on there uh if you are not sure which uh college which university you're going to attend I would say list any of the colleges that are even remotely a possibility that way you don't have to go back and do corrections so so many students will do their FAFSA or the dream application and they only put San Jose State UCLA Berkeley and then perhaps that it'll turn out that they decide to stay in the area and go to Community College but they didn't put any of their community colleges on their financial aid application so whatever school you're interested in attending you are able to uh submit an application to that school um and enter you know for example say Foothill College say deanza say San Jose City College um and what that does is those calls will get your information uh so when the government processes your FAFSA or your dream application uh and hopefully before you even register for classes will already have a record of you will have all of your details so that we're able to get get your money a little bit quicker um yeah you can imagine a lot of the questions students get are hey um you know I I'm seeing a bill on my classes is there anything I can do uh and that's when you would want to call 1 of the Specialists maybe there might be a form that's missing uh oftentimes it might just be a quick error on the application uh sometimes the student hasn't physically gone in and accepted the award um so there's a lot of different things that could happen in the financial aid Journey uh but students who are facing homelessness so uh if you do want to elaborate on your questions so meaning like perhaps you might not have an address um or uh you may be willing to have um tax information so um I will try to uh leave my information afterwards if we want to talk and I can kind of link you with 1 of our Specialists uh and they can help you answer your question specifically named um and the question is how difficult is it to fill out the FAFSA if your parents are undocumented um yeah so students um uh depending I think the government calls you a mixed family uh and so that would be perhaps a student who is uh perhaps a US citizen but your parents are undocumented that's actually a very very common uh to have parents who undocumented uh but perhaps they've done their um their uh tax forms uh and that's that's very beneficial because folks are able to do their taxes um and you are able to kind of submit your application there are issues uh that we have seen with the FAFSA from um perhaps folks have a um a taxpayer ID number uh like an itin number instead of a uh a social security number and so uh if you are able to kind of figure those things out you do have uh some time uh to do that so that's why I say don't wait until the last minute right before you're going to go off to college if you are able to do it before December is over um we do have a long time to kind of help you fill out those um those requirements or uh some students unfortunately uh when they're filling out their FAFSA they might not be able to sign it physically so there so the option um to submit a paper uh FAFSA as well or or a dream application so sometimes folks uh will mail it in put it in the mail um it does take a little bit longer that way but that is an option for some folks who maybe uh cannot physically sign online or maybe their parents don't have access the email um there are there are ways that we can we can help out okay and uh thank you so much Miss Bond as well for helping um answer those questions I do not believe we do have construction management um on our campus unfortunately but I will try to get the information on who has that information um 1 thing I will say is Foothill has a great um apprenticeship program so we won't wouldn't have the management program that you're looking for uh but we would be able to um guys students through if they want to be an electrician uh if they want to do pipe fitting welding uh even be a plumber um uh sheet metal Heating and ventilation HVAC um so we do have apprenticeships and those are largely um uh Union stations that are um in the San Jose area so if folks there's like I think something Milpas all throughout Santa Clara County San Jose as well so you can be an apprentice that's an option that a lot of students don't realize actually um is you can get uh you know maybe your your path isn't perhaps inside of a classroom maybe you don't like uh reading from a textbook as much uh don't we all but uh perhaps you like working with your hands or being more Hands-On um there are opportunities to do apprenticeships and those and a lot of folks don't realize that you can make so much more money sometimes uh you know being an electrician being a plumber uh being a pipe fitter because those are very specialized degrees uh there's a lot of demand for those programs but I don't we do not have specifically construction management though unfortunately all right any other questions let's see so um I will show you here this is the foothill website so foothill.edu um cost uh - FAA you can also just go uh photo college and go to costs and financial aid you can find information here um and then you can also find uh any resource guides for us so the photo colors promise for example you have more information here uh and again you have 2 years of free tuition let's say again as a reminder if folks decide to stay for longer than 2 years um you can can give uh financial aid through just the general financial aid process based on your financial need uh the promise program don't think that you only have 2 years and you have to get your classes out of the way uh some students will take you know their first semester their first quarter um to kind of figure out which what their major is going to be so definitely talk to a counselor at Foothill College uh and typically you're able to do that um you know in the springtime a lot of times we'll do application orientation workshops at your local high school as well so come to those um but definitely go to the cash for college workshops that are coming up you can find all the information though on our Foothill website look at different resources and uh 1 of the cool things too is if you are interested in getting a job on campus um you can find more information so um if you are interested in getting a job there are district funded jobs there are federal work study which I mentioned so you would want to do the financial aid application and be eligible for work study um and then typically you want to have like for example a 2.0 GPA at least um but again we do have hundreds of students who work at Foothill DM um Mission West Valley San Jose City Evergreen um so there's a lot of a lot of colleges in your area you're very fortunately so you do have options um and some students even take classes at multiple schools um that's actually a good point to bring up um because you will have 1 primary school so let's say you take um so a lot of students like the um ultrasound program at Foothill College and maybe they'll do uh you know some of the science classes at a school closer to home um you will have 1 primary school that you will select um and then that's the will will typically give you more financial aid so if you plan to take classes at multiple schools uh that is awesome and we totally welcome you to do it um just make sure you are talking to Representatives at both of those colleges uh because you will have to perhaps it might be different requirements for each 1 and the promise program might be different at each school so keep track of that to uh in the back of your mind uh let's see other questions that folks might have um if I fill out the FAFSA with my parents it tin numbers and they encounter issues with it will I be able to resolve these before the FAFSA priority deadline is over as well as how would I know if there is issues with my application uh yeah that's a great question so uh I do believe uh last year folks were uh told that the it to not use an itin number to use a social security number if they're able to I know some parents in mixed families again in this situation had to uh submit a paper form uh as well so uh yeah do it early if you can um because yes there are uh there's a chance that that that you may need extra forms or that the government might take a structure weeks to process and so I would definitely say if you can at all possible um to do it uh and now in December so when we come back in January you we might already know what some of these issues are um and yeah so you will typically uh some students uh will check their portal and 1 of the easy ways to check your financial aid status as well so let's say you decide let's say you're going to Foothill College uh you're for sure going to Foothill College uh you already applied um our version of I don't know of what you folks use to like look at your transcripts um but we have my portal uh which is 1 of our um that's kind of where we go to um go to Canvas um to go look at our classes to pay our fees if we have to pay for anything um and you have this at a college has kind of a dashboard like this uh you're able to go to student registration and sign up for classes uh 1 other thing I'll point out is degree works is a great tool um because you're able to track depending on whatever your major is you're able to keep track of um kind of what classes you still have remaining and also the important thing uh is oh wow that is really funny I have a balance of 4 dollars that I own well this is awkward okay so I owe 4 to the college um I'm not going to pay now uh I don't know what I'm gonna do I'm just gonna delete that myself um know so uh there's financial aid documents here I don't know why I didn't I've been taking classes that's so funny I wonder if they owe me 4 dollars um but here actually so you can see exactly how much money you might owe uh and for example if it's your first time in college this should be zero for you um so um if we require you to pay anything it might be like $50 uh for like the basic fees for the entire quarter so um that might be like for your Healthy uh that might be like for Student Government if you want to go to conferences as well so if you do want to uh get involved clubs or Student Government you can get money from the college um it doesn't have to be part of financial aid so let's say you want to start a club uh and you have a specific interest let's say you like cars or you like Legos it could literally be whatever your interest is the college will give you almost thousand dollars year to host events that could be to bring food for your meetings that could be um to um you know if you want to do perhaps a scholarship or something like that uh there are things that you can do um with that money so that wouldn't be personal finance that would be kind of helping your career uh and the social aspect of photo College um but yeah when students uh are when if you are a photo student you can check here to see your financial aid status um and you can also see your class schedule all that good information so each College each University will have a portal like this so if you are a student you can check um and typically you'll get a message saying hey um you have a financial aid available um please accept it or decline it um you'll also typically get an email uh from the um State of California and the FAFSA website uh that typically will tell you hey we have gotten your FAFSA we are processing it and then at some point they will give you um an emails and giving you the particulars on kind of what uh money might be available but again the money that you get might depend on the school that you're attending even if it's Community College it depends on which Community College it is so um and that football and Diana we have the same portal so if you want to go to fianza you can use the same portal I think uh West Valley and Mission have a similar portals same as San Jose City uh and Evergreen okay and then lastly to um and again if folks have any other questions please uh go ahead and um let me know but the last bit that I will share with folks um and this is super important this is not necessarily financially related but there is something called the career and academic Pathways at Foothill College where depending on your your major and again it's very important that folks meet with a counselor um and that can be either spring term or when you're in high school that could be the summer that you're about to start classes um but you can pick based on your major uh and kind of plan out your class uh your classes and a counselor again will use this tool so let's say um actually what was my major I did a business or sorry I did a psychology um so let's look at like society and culture let's see or maybe I'll do a General Degree let's see but you can pick any of those categories and see here uh the different uh Majors that are offered so say for example we want to do like a Spanish major like let's say we just want to study Spanish uh here's you can find more information on the certificates and the the on the degree and the cool part is you're able to see a program app so you're able to see um so okay so the first quarter if I want to get this Spanish certificate I have to take Spanish 1 then Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 okay that's pretty easy okay I'm going to go for a more complicated 1 that 1 has 3 classes on it um for example we can look at uh let's see yeah we'll do the business programs uh so here you can see some of these Majors here um so I think I'm in the same 1 again oh okay um so let's say you want to do uh for example business administration an associates degree okay um and again this is kind of just a sample of what your schedule might look like so for example uh for student who's doing business administration as a major at Foothill College uh this is the just the general recommendation it would be you would take 3 classes uh maybe 4 so in Fall you would take business 22 principles of business uh communication analytical thinking you can click on it you can see uh and for this they would say they would recommend you take statistics depending on your major so for me my major was psychology um I only had to take uh statistics for my class so if you're in a different major you might have to take different courses uh and so then and then an English class so you can see kind of a sample if you're interested and this is for a student who's interested in Business Administration at Foothill specifically here's a sample of what the class schedule might look like and then they're suggesting okay winter quarter remember file quarter is from September um to December to Christmas we have winter quarter that goes from January to the end of March again 12 weeks sorry yeah so 12 weeks long and then we have our spring semester which starts uh the first week of April and then typically goes to around mid June so it gives you kind of a sample so if you do want to follow this uh this is not the exact I get see uh the counselor can talk to you about what the I get see is that's the general curriculum for transfer students um but you can again see this under the career and academic Pathways if you want to check out the college and make sure to look at the cost and financial aid and find all that great information and if you are ready to apply um you can apply here and then I definitely recommend that you make an appointment um to meet with the counselor because that would be potentially the next step uh check out the transfer center as well we do have a lot of opportunities if you want to end up at UCLA Berkeley San Jose State um Stanford other schools um there are opportunities to transfer to to those schools so uh please stay in touch um and I think I see 1 question and again it is 7 so thank you so much for Joe folks for joining looks like we're out of here right on time but will the faster get back to me if they require extra forms uh from me uh sometimes they will sometimes they won't uh sometimes you will have to check uh on the website um and it might say your application is still pending uh and you might have to follow up unfortunately um so uh yeah there are opportunities for folks to um get their their FAFSA form back and and yes sometimes you you'll get an email saying like we require this uh specific document the specific form they might require you to hey uh we trust you but just show us that you graduated high school for example uh proof of high school completion so um yes uh I would say you submit the FAFSA um and uh I would say check in and every couple weeks every few weeks sometimes it it might take a month or 2 or 3 to process um but that's why we focus want to do it as early as possible don't wait until March don't wait until uh May when you're about to graduate from high school to try to do it as soon as possible so if if there are any issues which tend to um there any issues we can totally help you out before it comes time that you enroll in college all right and again I will leave
