ending parents and students this is mrs. lovey Arrow work experience teacher at Lee Delmar Boynton West Mount and Prospect High School welcome to back to school night I'm not able to attend some of your school so I was making this recording so that you can watch it anytime at your leisure I'm going to share my screen at this moment so that you can see what we're going to talk about this evening here's our course information sheet for work experience you'll notice that I teach this course Wednesday morning or Tuesday Italy from 7:30 to 8:20 Wednesday mornings at Delmar first. 8:30 to 9:20 on Wednesdays at 1:10 from 11:45 to 12:35 Thursdays at West lunch from 7:30 to 8:20 and Fridays at Prospect from 7:30 to 8:20 students will be learning all kinds of things were related to workplace we are starting with how to read their pay stubs I'm after introduced to the course of course and all of the forms that they need to fill out for the class and their job site then learn about their paycheck stub deductions they're going to be learning about labor laws in the workplace I do understand their rights as an employee they're going to be learning about safety in the workplace everything related to sexual harassment discrimination on all of the things that people deal with in the workplace where that's concerned communication in the place which is really important and in intertwined between all of that is going to be soft skills I'm a very big proponent on soft skills those are the skills that all employers are looking for in their employees they can train them on how to do a job but they can't train them on how to be friendly and courteous and responsible and honest so those are the skills we tend to focus on as well in our class so battle round out the first semester second semester you'll notice that we are going to be moving into how to manage their lives time management goal-setting budgeting that's a really good eye-opening unit that the students will do where they get it to see how much money they spend in a two week. And then you'll report on that they're also going to learn about career assessment and finally end the year with job search techniques resume writing business letter getting them ready for the actual real-world I'm just a little bit about the course itself it is a year-long class I do take students at the semester but we prefer that they stay for the whole year they need to bring books to class every week they do need to be here and on time since the class only meets one day per week my grading policy is here and all of this information is available to use on canvas if you look at our core the canvas and go to the announcements at the top of the page you'll see the same course information sheets as far as classroom rules and policies they need to be signed in by the time bell rings on this. They will be tardy I'm a stickler about that because that's a workplace policy as well they need to be on time on the job if they are going to be absent when asked if he look at Kansas and try to do this I meant that they would have been catching up on with the rest of the class so instead of showing up the following week to say what did I miss I asked them to please look at canvas when they're absent and do the assignment on their own course minimum senses are absolutely a must if they have to be absent however that's what I'm asking that they do this year I set up a third type of job so most of my students have real jobs in the workplace a couple are doing non paid internships and then I've set up something because them on the pandemic started we needed to have something in place for students that could work so we have set up something called special projects and that's for students that either have too many classes on their schedule they're doing the sport they have so much going on in their lives that they don't need a job or don't have a job but would like to do something to get credit for the class and stay in the class and learn the concepts so they there is something that they have to do outside of class through their different projects that they work on maybe something that they've been wanting to do for a long time build a website or do something related to their future career which they will turn in hours in Calallen or every week but at least it's not going to a job site at a specific time so if you're student falls into one of those three categories there are forms that they have to fill out for either a real job an unpaid internship or a special project so other than that that is the nuts and bolts of our course now credits on and not explain how that works students will turn in copies of their pay stubs every time they get paid and they will turn those into me via email then I will record them on a spreadsheet and at the end of the semester they will get whatever many credits they have coming to them based on this chart that you're looking here so General work experience our students have jobs and they can run anywhere from Two and a Half to 10 credits a semester depending on the hours that they work during the whole semester so they do need to turn in their pay stubs on a regular basis and then those credits will be Alex exploratory work experience or non paid internship students they can earn a maximum of five credit or two and a half credit depending on the hours that they do do on their training site and special projects same thing as the internship students they can earn either two and a half or five credits depending on the hours that they put in for their special projects so I hope that helps explain or helps to clarify that you might have regarding the work experience class I'm sorry for those of you that I can't be with in person but three of my five schools are having back to school night on the same night so I'm not able to be there in person if you need to reach me for any reason please feel free to reach out via canvas I'm available on email there or you can text me on remind I have put a remind message in all of my class announcement and parents have been signing up so please look into that if you'd like to reach me via remind and that is a text messaging system where we can communicate back and forth I hope you have a wonderful evening. Good luck with your students and the rest of their backs all night and we will talk soon bye-bye
