College Entrance Test Requirements

University of California

You must take two SAT Subject Tests and the ACT Assessment plus Writing or SAT Reasoning Test. Direct the testing agencies to report your scores to each UC campus to which you plan to apply.

California State University

Test scores are required unless you have a grade point average above 3.0 and are a resident of California. The CSU uses a calculation called an eligibility index that combines your high school grade point average with the score you earn on either the SAT or ACT tests. Even if you have a GPA above 3.0, it is useful to take either an SAT or ACT as the score may indicate if you do not need to take English and math placement tests after you are admitted and before you enroll at the CSU.

Private and Out-of-State Colleges

College Entrance Test Requirements vary from school to school.  Be sure to check the admissions requirements of each college where you plan to apply.

ACT®

The ACT® test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.

  • The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science.
  • The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.

Your composite score and each test score (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science) range from 1 (low) to 36 (high). The Composite Score is the average of your four test scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

SAT®

The SAT Reasoning Test is a measure of the critical thinking skills needed for academic success in college. The SAT tests how well you analyze and solve problems. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors.  The SAT has three scores, each on the scale of 200 to 800. The score includes writing (W 200-800), mathematics (M 200-800), and critical reading (CR 200-800). Two subscores are given for the writing section: a multiple-choice subscore on a scale of 20-80, and an essay subscore on a scale of 2-12.

SAT Subject Tests are designed to measure knowledge and skills in particular subject areas. Subject Tests fall into five general subject areas: English, History and Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Languages. Many colleges use the Subject Tests for admissions, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection.  All Subject Tests are one-hour, multiple-choice tests.
